Finding the right APL placement can feel overwhelming, especially if it is your first time. But with the right strategy and a bit of planning ahead, it does not have to be difficult.
What Is APL?#
APL stands for arbetsplatsförlagt lärande (workplace-based learning) and is the mandatory internship within Sweden's upper secondary vocational programs. During APL, you work at a real company and apply what you have learned in school. It is an examined part of your education, so it is not just something to "get through."
According to Skolverket (the Swedish National Agency for Education), students in vocational programs must complete at least 15 weeks of APL during their upper secondary studies. Some programs, such as the Health and Social Care program or the Crafts program, may have even more.
Why Is APL Important?#
APL gives you things the classroom cannot:
- Work experience before you have even graduated
- Industry contacts that can lead to summer jobs or employment
- Confidence: you realize you actually know what you have learned
- Real-world grounding: you see how theory works in practice
Employers value APL experience highly. A student who has performed well during APL has a significant advantage when job hunting.
How to Find an APL Placement: Step by Step#
1. Talk to Your APL Coordinator#
Every school has a person responsible for APL contacts. Start there. They often have lists of companies that have previously hosted students and know which ones work best for your program.
2. Think About What You Want to Learn#
Do not just think about where you want to be, think about what you want to be able to do afterward. If you are in the Electricity and Energy program, you might want to focus on installation work rather than administration. Be specific.
3. Search Broadly but Targeted#
Send applications to multiple companies, but tailor each message. A short email or phone call that shows you know what the company does makes a big difference.
Example of a good first email:
Hi! My name is Anna and I am studying the Child and Recreation program at [school]. This spring I will be doing my APL and I am looking for a placement at your preschool. I have read about your work with outdoor education and would love to learn more about it. Could I come for a visit?
4. Prepare as If It Were a Job Interview#
If you are invited for a visit or interview, dress neatly, be on time, and ask questions. Show that you are genuinely interested, not just that you need a placement.
5. Get the Paperwork Done on Time#
APL requires agreements between the school, the company, and you. Make sure all documents are filled out and submitted before your period starts. Ask your coordinator what is needed.
During APL: How to Make a Great Impression#
Show up on time. Every day. No exceptions. This is the simplest and most important piece of advice.
Be curious. Ask questions, ask for new tasks when you are done, show initiative. Nobody expects you to know everything, but everyone appreciates a willingness to learn.
Keep a logbook. Most schools require it. Write briefly each day about what you did and what you learned. It helps both with the assessment and as a personal record.
Solve problems before you complain. If something is not working, talk to your workplace supervisor first, then the school if needed. Show that you take responsibility.
Common Challenges and How to Handle Them#
"I cannot find a placement"#
Contact your school early. They are obligated to help you find a functioning APL placement. Broaden your search geographically if needed.
"I am only doing boring tasks"#
Talk to your supervisor. Explain what you want to learn and ask if you can try other tasks. Most supervisors appreciate the initiative.
"It is not working with my supervisor"#
It happens sometimes. Contact your APL coordinator at the school. They can mediate or, in the worst case, find a new placement.
"I am nervous"#
Completely normal. The first day is always uncomfortable. It passes quickly once you settle into the routine. Most workplaces host APL students regularly and know that you are there to learn.
APL Placements by Vocational Area#
| Program | Typical APL Workplaces |
|---|---|
| Building and Construction | Construction companies, flooring installers, painting firms |
| Electricity and Energy | Installation companies, energy companies |
| Vehicle and Transport | Workshops, haulage companies, bus operators |
| Child and Recreation | Preschools, after-school centers, sports associations |
| Health and Social Care | Care homes, health centers, hospitals |
| Business and Administration | Retail stores, offices, e-commerce |
| Hotel and Tourism | Hotels, restaurants, event companies |
| Crafts | Hair salons, tailoring shops, forges |
Make APL Your Springboard#
APL is more than a school requirement. It is your first real contact with the working world, and the impression you make stays with you. Students who take APL seriously do not just build skills, they build a reputation that makes it easier to get a job after graduation.
