Internships in Construction and Skilled Trades – Guide for Students and Companies

The Building and Construction Programme is one of Sweden's largest upper secondary programs and the internship is at its core. At least 15 weeks of workplace-based learning (APL) are required, but many schools allocate even more time at worksites. For students aiming for carpentry, painting, sheet metal work or civil engineering, the internship is where the profession takes shape.

Internships in construction and skilled trades mean the student works at a construction site or in a workshop under supervision of a professional. The student learns the craft's techniques, understands workplace routines and becomes part of a work team – with focus on safety, quality and professional identity.

Why internships are crucial in construction#

The construction sector cannot be taught solely in a classroom. Material feel, time estimation and teamwork are best trained at a real worksite. The industry organization Byggföretagen emphasizes that APL quality directly impacts the sector's skills supply.

  • Sweden is expected to need to recruit over 50,000 new construction workers by 2030 according to Boverket
  • The shortage is greatest for trained craftspeople: carpenters, electricians, HVAC installers
  • Internships are the primary recruitment channel – the majority of apprentices are offered jobs after graduation

Safety at the workplace#

The construction sector has a higher injury rate than most industries. The Swedish Work Environment Authority sets clear requirements:

Student rights#

  • personal protective equipment must be provided by the workplace
  • the student must never perform risky work without supervision
  • the employer has the same work environment responsibility as for employees
  • students under 18 are covered by additional protective rules

Common risks#

RiskMeasure
Falls from heightFall protection training and supervision
Heavy liftingInstruction and aids
NoiseHearing protection and information
Chemical substancesProtective equipment and training
Machinery and toolsInstruction before use

The school and company share responsibility. The school must ensure the student has basic safety training before the internship starts.

What the student should learn during APL#

Skolverket's program structure for the Building and Construction Programme specifies clear knowledge requirements. During APL the student should:

  • follow construction documents and drawings
  • perform tasks using the craft's materials and methods
  • work safely with tools and machinery
  • collaborate in work teams
  • take responsibility for their part of the work
  • follow workplace routines for order and environment

The supervisor should be able to connect work tasks to these goals. This requires that the school has communicated clearly.

How the company hosts a construction intern#

1. Assign a supervisor#

Choose an experienced professional who has interest and patience. The supervisor doesn't need to be a pedagogue but needs to understand what the student should learn.

2. Plan the effort#

  • Which work tasks are current during the period?
  • Which tasks can the student participate in?
  • How do you gradually increase responsibility over the weeks?

3. Welcome properly#

The first day is about safety and comfort: safety walkthrough, tour, introduction to the team, clear expectations.

4. Give feedback regularly#

Construction is a fast-paced profession. But take time for short check-ins – perhaps during fika or at the end of the day. It doesn't need to be formal.

5. Assess and document#

The school often requests a supervisor evaluation or assessment form. Fill it in factually and honestly – that helps the student more than a generic "went well".

The APL coordinator's role#

The school needs close contact with the workplaces:

  • visits during the internship period, preferably at least once per APL period
  • ongoing communication with the supervisor
  • quick handling of problems (work environment, absence, conflicts)
  • documentation of all internship placements and supervisors

A functioning APL coordination requires that the school has resources, time and tools. It's easy for the coordinator role to become an extra task for an already overloaded teacher.

Common challenges in construction APL#

Uneven quality between workplaces Some companies actively supervise, others give the student menial tasks. The school needs to monitor quality and be willing to change placements when needed.

The worksite shuts down during the period Projects end, weather stops work. Flexible planning and backup placements reduce the risk.

The student feels insecure A construction site can be intimidating for a 17-year-old. Clear introduction, supportive supervisor and contact with the school reduce insecurity.

Hard to find placements in rural areas Where the construction sector is small, schools need to collaborate regionally and use digital tools for matching.

How Prakto can help#

A digital internship platform like Prakto can facilitate matching between schools and construction companies, gather APL agreements and supervisor information in one place, and make it easier to follow up on students during the internship period.

Frequently asked questions about construction internships#

How long is APL on the Building and Construction Programme?#

At least 15 weeks over the three upper secondary years, but many schools have 20–25 weeks or more.

Can the student use all machinery?#

No. Students under 18 have restrictions on dangerous machinery and risky work according to the Work Environment Authority's regulations. The supervisor is responsible for instructing and supervising.

What happens if the company can't keep the student for the full period?#

Notify the school early. The coordinator will find a new placement. The student should not be without an internship.

Can the student do APL on a private building project or at home?#

No. APL must take place at a workplace with a supervisor and connection to professional life. Work at a family home does not count.

Does the supervisor need training?#

Skolverket strongly recommends it. Many municipalities offer supervisor training for free. Even a short training makes a significant difference.

Conclusion#

Internships in construction and skilled trades are not a complement to the education – they are the education. The quality of APL determines what skilled workers Sweden gets. It requires engaged supervisors, clear planning and close collaboration between school and company. When it works, the student leaves upper secondary school with a professional identity, not just a grade.
